Learning Without Limits (LWL) is an education-focused project of the Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI), implemented in Kaduna State, Nigeria, with support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance (GOA) of the Obama Foundation. The project was developed in response to widening educational inequalities faced by adolescent girls, particularly those arising from poverty, limited digital access and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
LWL is designed to reduce the digital divide, expand access to virtual and supplementary learning opportunities, and strengthen academic outcomes for girls in public secondary schools, while promoting community and institutional collaboration around girls’ education.
Background and Rationale
Nigeria has the highest number of out-of-school children globally, with girls accounting for an estimated 60 per cent of this population. In Kaduna State alone, hundreds of thousands of children are out of school, many due to poverty, early marriage, insecurity and limited access to quality education. Although legal and policy frameworks exist to protect the right to education, structural and socio-cultural barriers continue to limit girls’ participation and performance.
The COVID‑19 pandemic further exposed and deepened these inequalities. School closures and the shift to online learning disproportionately affected girls from low-income households who lacked access to digital devices, internet connectivity and virtual learning skills. Learning Without Limits was developed to address these gaps by providing targeted digital and educational support to adolescent girls in public schools.
Project Aim
The overall aim of the Learning Without Limits project is to improve access to quality, inclusive and technology-enabled education for adolescent girls in Kaduna State.
Specifically, the project seeks to:
- Reduce the digital divide and gaps in access to virtual learning for adolescent girls;
- Provide supplementary educational opportunities beyond the limitations of existing school curricula;
- Strengthen girls’ subject-matter knowledge and academic performance;
- Promote a community-inclusive approach to girls’ education through collaboration with state and non-state actors.
Target Beneficiaries
Learning Without Limits directly supported 50 adolescent girls selected from eight public girls’ secondary schools across selected local government areas in Kaduna State. The beneficiaries were drawn from low-income households and communities with limited access to digital learning resources.
Indirect beneficiaries include teachers, parents and community members who were engaged through sensitisation and partnership activities aimed at supporting girls’ education.
Key Project Components
Digital Access and Learning Tools
The project provided beneficiaries with essential digital learning tools, including tablets and supporting accessories, as well as internet data, to enable participation in virtual and blended learning.
Virtual Learning and Digital Skills
Girls were trained in basic digital and virtual learning skills to help them effectively use online educational platforms and resources. This component improved their confidence and ability to engage with technology-supported education.
Supplementary Education
LWL offered structured supplementary learning to enhance understanding and performance in key subject areas that were affected by school closures and curriculum limitations during the pandemic period.
Life Skills and Future-Oriented Learning
Beyond academics, participants were exposed to life skills and introductory training in areas such as digital creativity, civic awareness, climate action and sustainable development, supporting holistic development and future readiness.
Partnerships
Learning Without Limits was implemented through strategic collaboration with public and private sector partners, including:
- Kaduna State Ministry of Education – supporting school engagement and alignment with education policies;
- Kaduna State Ministry of Environment – contributing to environmental awareness and sustainability components;
- Ihifix Foundation – providing ICT and technical support for digital learning;
- Soso Care – contributing innovative approaches linked to health and social protection.
These partnerships strengthened implementation and promoted shared ownership of girls’ education outcomes.
The Girls Opportunity Alliance (GOA)
The Girls Opportunity Alliance is a global initiative of the Obama Foundation that supports grassroots organisations working to advance adolescent girls’ education. GOA provides funding, visibility and connection to a global network of leaders committed to ensuring girls can access education and reach their full potential.
Through GOA’s support, EWEI was able to implement Learning Without Limits as part of a broader global effort to address barriers to girls’ education using locally driven solutions.
Outcomes and Significance
The Learning Without Limits project contributed to:
- Improved access to digital learning resources for adolescent girls;
- Increased capacity of beneficiaries to engage in virtual education;
- Enhanced academic confidence and learning continuity during and after pandemic-related disruptions;
- Strengthened collaboration between civil society, government and private sector actors around girls’ education.
LWL demonstrates how targeted, community-based interventions can bridge educational and digital gaps for girls and support more inclusive learning systems.
